The 3rd Rifle Brigade battalion had arrived in France in September, 1914 as part of 17 Brigade. Originally part of 6th Division this Brigade had been transferred to 24th Division in October, 1915. At some point, as yet unknown, Edward Ellis was wounded. He was being sent back to England aboard the Hospital Ship Anglia when, on 17th November, 1915 she hit a mine laid by the German submarine UC-5 when just off the coast near Folkestone. Within fifteen minutes the ship sank and he was one of the 164 people that lost their lives. |
